July 2026 Construction Update

The West Alabama Highway Design-Build Project is actively under construction throughout the corridor. On the southern half, from Thomasville to Demopolis, work continues to progress on earthwork, drainage, paving, and bridge construction. On the northern half, from Demopolis to Moundville, clearing operations and utility relocation activities are ongoing.

Dixon Mills Bypass

Segment 1 — Crews are currently performing clearing and grubbing operations, with grading work underway.

Segment 2 — Clearing and grubbing operations are active, with grading work progressing alongside.

Segment 3 — This segment is one of the most advanced in the corridor. Grading continues along with storm drainage and culvert construction. Bridge construction is active, road base installation is underway, and permanent grassing has begun in completed areas.

Segment 4 — Clearing and grubbing are ongoing, with grading and storm drainage construction also actively in progress.

Segment 5 — Crews are performing clearing and grubbing alongside active grading and storm drainage and culvert construction.

Segment 6 — This segment is the newest to enter active construction. Clearing and grubbing operations are just now beginning.


Segment 7 — This is the most advanced segment on the project. Grading and storm drainage work continue, road base installation and permanent grassing are underway, and paving operations have begun. Bridge construction will be ramping up soon, with clearing for bridge work at the railroad crossing now underway.

ALDOT and the Brasfield & Gorrie team are currently working together to advance and complete the design of the West Alabama Highway. Brasfield & Gorrie has partnered with HDR and eight other Alabama based design subconsultants in order to accelerate the design process and allow construction to begin.

The West Alabama Highway will create a four-lane divided highway connecting Mobile and Tuscaloosa. The project has been promised by the state’s political leaders for decades as a way to help promote economic development, job opportunities and connect West Alabama residents to essential services.

Public meetings will be held throughout the construction process and details be announced in the future. Please check back or sign up for email updates to be notified when the next public meeting is scheduled.

An initial round of public meetings about the West Alabama Highway was held in December 2021 in Thomasville, Moundville, Linden and Greensboro. Residents were given the opportunity to learn more about the project, ask questions and express their opinions.
