Purpose of Event

DEMOPOLIS – The project field office for the West Alabama Highway will be announced at a ceremony on Monday, April 28 at 10 a.m. at the location of a former grocery store, 1602 U.S. Highway 80 in Demopolis.

Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins, State Senator Bobby Singleton and Tony Harris with the Alabama Department of Transportation will speak at the announcement ceremony.

The field office will serve as the central construction hub for the multi-year effort to build a four-lane divided highway from Thomasville to Moundville. At peak construction, the
West Alabama Highway is expected to employ 700 workers.

Construction Updates

ALDOT and the Brasfield & Gorrie team are currently working together to advance and complete the design of the West Alabama Highway. Brasfield & Gorrie has partnered with HDR and eight other Alabama based design subconsultants in order to accelerate the design process and allow construction to begin.
The West Alabama Highway will create a four-lane divided highway connecting Mobile and Tuscaloosa. The project has been promised by the state’s political leaders for decades as a way to help promote economic development, job opportunities and connect West Alabama residents to essential services.

An initial round of public meetings about the West Alabama Highway was held in December 2021 in Thomasville, Moundville, Linden and Greensboro. Residents were given the opportunity to learn more about the project, ask questions and express their opinions.
